Practical 6
The last search facilities is the invisible web ( datebases ) which is referred as deep web. It consists of highly authoritative information and is a collection of information stored in the form of data. They are reliable and more up-to-date information. Most of them require us to pay to access them. Some examples of these invisible webs are: -Acadamic gateway -Complete planet Temasek polytechnic has its own digital portal library as they purchased those aricles which allows the stuffs or students from TP to access to them and are they are not searcheable through internet search engines. For examples are TP's E-books database ITPRO and also TP's Digital Library Portal Research Gateway. However, i don't feel that these invisible webs can be more effective than search engines. True enough that thses webs can provide reliable and recent articles. But the effectiveness really have to depend on what are the topics i am looking for. By learning more about these search facilities, i can apply them to help me get information easier and faster in future. This certainly benefit me in researching greatly, saving up the trouble of viewing pages of irrelevant information and avoid being lost in the sea of resources. ![]()
A public holiday-Deepavali on Monday.
We are not spared from having EIR lesson. Not exactly having lesson in school though but we are to do our e-learning: forum discussion- Posting my thoughts on a certain topic and receiving comments from classmates. This e-learning involves communicating on the internet, something related to my research topic. Perhaps in the future, schools are not needed as parents can enroll their children to 'online schools', lessons are taught using web cam and assignments are emailed to the students. Enough of my imagination of 'online schools'. I came across an article which says employers are starting to look at social networking sites which help them research on possible job candidates. So, beware of what you post on your social networking sites. I wonder do lecturers search for our sites for example facebook? Here's the link for the article: Click here! ![]()
Practical 4 and 5
I get to know many search facilities like search engines ( e.g.google ), meta search and also subject directory. These search facilities which i have never came across in the past really helps me improve my knowledge and understanding of searching information. Meta search, the 'leader', enables me to collect information in the shortest time from all search engines. They combine results according to the relevance and source. Which means when i m searching in meta search, i am actually searching other great engines as well. Subject directory have which is also known as subject catalogs. I can select and browse a particular category to decrease the chances of having irrelevant results. And the topics are organized from more general to the specific. It does helps when i understand and clear of what i am looking for. What are the differences between them? Subject directories are human compiled and thus able to lessen the number of pages in the database. Whereas search engines are machine compiled using spiders/crawlers and often produces huge number of pages. I personally prefer to use google and meta search because i don't like the limitations as i afraid i may miss out some information i wanted. i will rather to have more information on hands too choose from. I have added in site feeds in my blog. Through what i know, site feeds took out blog skins and present just words. This make it more formal or rather readable as compared from reading in 'bling bling' blogs. It certainly will be a good way to present resource from blogs. ![]()

Practical 3.
Thinking back on how i did my research for my projects before attending EIR lesson, i only uses both yahoo and google. When searching, i usually type in the whole chunk of sentences or put in the keywords.
Then i came to realize when going through lecture, I should create a suitable search strategy, picking up keywords and having different word variations. Not forgetting that by putting in common boolean operators like 'AND', 'OR' and also '*' which help me to form my search query which will be able me to narrow down or broaden the topic i am searching for. I wasn't aware that there is scholar google till i work on this practical. Both search engine are rather effective to me and they have their own strengths and weaknesses. To my personal opinion, i felt that scholar google is able to provides me with the most recent articles and the amount of pages is lesser which really helps to filter out some irrelevant pages of information. As mentioned in previous posts, my research topic is on the developments of internet social network services, i will need to post on a discussion forum to get others opinion and feedback. Honestly, i am still trying to phrase out what i should i post on the forum. What will others think of my research topic, will others care to reply or did i make myself clear in what i wanted to ask. These considerations i given to myself will somehow create certain stress. Working on citation and bibliography can be a tedious. There are formats which i must follow and not just 'copy and paste' the url links. However, this is how we should give credits to the people who provide me with information i needed. ![]()

E-shopping spree!!!
So, i have gotten myself imaginary $500 to get the stuffs i wanted through shopping on the internet. As mentioned in the previous post, internet is getting powerful, besides making 'online' friends though the network services, people start to sell and buy items through such services too. Thus, i went into one of such social network services which allows me to chat with the other users and also did my e-shopping. This service provides feature whereby user can post up the photos of the items they are selling. The items are either brand new or second hand. And that's why there is an item condition grading for the product. Quality of the item depends on the honesty of the seller. I found this piano black psp slim selling at $300 which includes:- Brand New 4gb Sony ProDuo (R.P $55) - travel charger - USB cable, - Cond 7.5/10 Item condition:
Nowadays people have their own blogs. Apart from blogging on their own daily life, more and more people set up blog shop, which the user's main aim is to sell different items like, bags, clothes, shoes and other more. I visited one blog shop and came across a bag i like. ![]() **R8354002 - Black, $37.00 **R8354008 - Coffee, $37.00 **R8354012 - Camel, $37.00 Finishing: 3 outer zip & 2 outer compartments Size: Free Lenght: 38cm Width: 14cm Height: 30cm Shoulder: 48cm Sling: 144cm I spent a total of imaginary $337.00, can i have back real cash of $163.00? These are the links i shopped for the items i wanted. Social network service Blog shop ![]() Practical 1 and 2 A am rather confused on the first day of the lesson. In my second semester of my second year and i am taking up this cds- effective internet research. Slowly, little by little, i understands what this subject is about. Creating this blog is the first assignment and i am to do my reflections on the blog. I find it rather interesting to do our assignments in a blogging style and it is much more better than just typing in document format ( the 'traditional' way ). At least i find it kind of fun. Through practical 1 & 2, i learns about organizations sites and personal sites. Like a book, there is a content page with different chapters. Organizational sites are actually the 'Leader' and maintain a collection of different websites. As for personal sites, it is maintain by an individual which includes materials on specific subject and can also be in an organizational page. Furthermore, the sites are of different purposes such as information, advocacy, business/marketing, news, personal and entertainment. As what the titles say, information is to provide factual information and entertainment is to provide entertainment. As for advocacy, the purpose is to influence the public opinion. But can a site contain different purposes too? For example, i came across a social network service which includes feature like selling and buying of items. Thus, this site will have entertainment and business/marketing purposes.
Internet nowadays is so powerful. You can almost get everything you need with just one click. I can earn some cash by selling items on net, purchase things i want through e-shopping and even make friends. The internet social network services is expanding. People form their 'collection' of friends, finding people with the same interests. Websites like friendster and facebook are popular among youngsters. I believe most people have accounts in at least one of the social network services. So, the topic i chose to discuss about is the developments of internet social network services. ![]()

Allows me to self promote myself in the first post.
*clear throat* I am the youngest child in the family. My family members are my father, mother, elder brother ( age gap of 9 years ) and also... Mr Haber Currently, i am a student in Temasek Polytechnic, taking up diploma in product and industrial design and is in my second year. Though it is tough but is worth it when i am able to pick up skills in using of design softwares and also the understanding of the whole design process. I can spend days staying at home, sitting in front of the computer or tv for long hours to watch dramas and movies. Snacks are always prepared before the show starts. Horror movies are the best entertainment for me. Welcome to watch horror movies with me, buy some snacks for me and i promise not to scare you. |
